On 25th February, 1915, the 1st Lincolnshire battalion of 9 Brigade, 3rd Division moved into the front line at Ypres, near to St Eloi and on top of a small mound, the Bluff’ which made their position conspicuous. They remained here until relieved two days later when they moved back to billets. On 27th February, the day on which William Curtin was killed, the enemy continued to shell the positions held by C Company and destroyed a dug out, causing further casualties.
